The Pain – A Will of Her Own

(This content contains a major spoiler to the story)

I’ve never read a romance novel where the main character wants to commit suicide and it caused me many sleepless nights while writing A Will of Her Own. But I persisted because depression and feelings of emptiness are a reality for millions of people. Many readers will not be able to relate to that portion of the story. If you’re one of those people, I am truly happy that you’ve never felt those depths of despair.

Both the suicidal thoughts and the subsequent recovery in my story were condensed because it is a romance so I didn’t want to linger, but I did want to illustrate that it isn’t a quick or easy journey by completely glossing over it. If you’re interested in the subject, I suggest finding a non-fiction book to provide accurate representations.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please contact help immediately. There are so many excellent social workers, counselors, therapists, nurses, and doctors working with those struggling with suicide. (Thanks Nikki and Renee!)

The song “Geraldine” by Glasvegas is told from the perspective of a social worker.

“When your sparkle evades your soul, I’ll be at your side to console. When you’re standing on the window ledge, I’ll talk you back from the edge. I will turn your tide, be your Shepard and your guide. When you’re lost in the deep and darkest place around, may my words walk you home, safe and sound.”

Pain is temporary; happier times are on the other side
